Remote Workers Helping the Environment
Remote working means you can't freeze me because we both control our thermostats. I wonder how much that saves companies in electrical use alone with remote workers managing their climates & utilities. It's a green job…
Could we perhaps see a remote workers' tax break in the future? For Employers and employed?
Remote working has advantages, not only for the worker to work from their home office but also for employers.
I would go so far as to say, especially as the trend continues toward remote work, that we collectively impact our environment for the better.
Have you ever wondered how working from your home benefits our environment?
I have weeks I don't drive at all. I'm not spending as much at the pump or burning as much fuel when I go. I install cost-effective energy-saving appliances etc. I am paperless in my remote work & also researching ways to reduce my waste.
As I mentioned, we control our home environment for one. Nobody is freezing or burning us out of the office. We each have our thermostat and set it accordingly. That's saving for employers not having employees dueling with the thermostat! If they are an employer of any size, the thermostat is probably controlled remotely.
On top of that, the employer's electricity savings are water & sanitation savings. The bigger the employer, the more significant the savings! Win for them; we pay our utilities anyway.
I can only imagine the other overhead expenses companies save by seeing the beauty of hiring remote workers.
The plus, and most important, is the positive impact this trend is having on our environment.
I hope academia studies the impact of remote workers on our environment.
Oh, wait!! Wait...!

To claim a home office as an exemption, I have learned, one must be self-employed.
Home offices for remote workers employed by a company are ineligible to get a tax break for working from home & utilizing their resources for their workspace.
Working Remotely? Here are four things to pay attention to this tax season (CNBC Feb 2023)
I work remotely for a company & have been with them for a few years. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work remotely. I belong to a great team too! I think all remote workers need a tax break, both self-employed and those employed by a company.
I think it's valid to classify remote work positions as green jobs for employers and employees.
For this reason, it would be great to give both employer and employee an outright tax credit, as green jobs are helping our environment—employers for hiring remote workers and remote workers for using their homes as an office.
I remember reading the news summarized in this Bloomberg (Feb 2023) article. There is a discussion around remote workers and taxes at high levels.
If you agree, consider calling or emailing your elected officials, especially on a state level.
You know what, guys? We never know until we ask & I am.
